Penstock Replacement

Scope of Works

  • Undertake full 3D model of wet well to inform design and construction methodologies

  • Take core samples of chamber brickwork & assess structural integrity and extent of any deterioration

  • Replace the existing 7’ 7” diameter cast iron penstocks

Challenges

Lifting Arrangements – No existing means of lifting and mobile craneage would add to Client long-term expenditure. GEL therefore opted to design and erect a 10t Gantry Crane to service the project.

Structural Bracing – Upon inspection, GEL learnt there were two absent original arch structures. We therefore designed and installed a bespoke steelwork bracing system to support the chamber which had to be positioned without isolation of the flows beneath.

Isolations - The project had to be split into three stages to allow the pumping station to operate whilst the project progressed, this allowed for some careful planning to achieve suitable isolations so works could proceed safely.
